REC Web Steering Committee

By Gabor Heves, Regional Environment Centre for Central and Eastern Europe (REC)
May 2001

The Regional Environmental Centre for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) holds bi-monthly meetings of a Web Steering Committee. The committee reviews Web site issues and addresses future development. Membership on the committee is open, on a volunteer basis, throughout the institute and departmental directors are invited to participate in every meeting. Organizers compare their work to that of an editorial board.

The meetings are perceived as a way to engage the entire staff about the site and to solicit feedback from non-Web staff who are often in a position to review the Web site with "fresh eyes" and therefore contribute useful ideas.

Such a committee is a forum for dialogue and information flow. It raises awareness of the Web site and keeps Web staff informed about the organization's work.

The sessions focus on the larger issues of strategy and management, but also address document-specific matters. The sessions are also seen as an opportunity to brainstorm.

Each meeting is 45 minutes in length.
